What is Scottish yarn?
Also known as mercerized cotton, Scottish yarn is a high quality cotton that goes one step further in its design. Derived from the cotton plant, the fluffy cotton fibers are first harvested and ginned before being separated and aerated. They are then transformed into yarn that will be soaked in a soda bath, this chemical process is called ""mercerization"". Its name comes from its creator, John Mercer, a weaver who was particularly intrigued by chemistry. He noticed that this process added after spinning made the cotton smooth, shiny and stronger. The colors were also deeper and more durable over the course of many washes. Although mercerization was discovered in England, the first Scottish yarn as we know it today was actually obtained near Glasgow. Today, mercerized cotton is recognized worldwide for its elegance and strength. At Bleuforêt, we have fun adapting it to offer you a wide choice of sock styles while maintaining the properties of a quality Scottish yarn.
