What is mercerised cotton?
Mercerised cotton, or Scottish yarn, is a high quality cotton that has undergone an extra step in its design. After being harvested from the cotton plant and ginned, the fluffy cotton fibres are separated, aerated and then woven into a cotton yarn. The step that makes all the difference: mercerisation, which consists of soaking the cotton yarn in a soda bath. The name of this process comes from its creator John Mercer, an English weaver's son with a passion for chemistry. Through his experiments, he noticed that this extra step made the cotton stronger, smoother and brighter. The colours of the yarn also became deeper and more resistant to washing. The process was improved and the Scottish yarn as we know it today was obtained near Glasgow, Scotland. Today, mercerised cotton is known worldwide for its fineness, elegance and strength. At Bleuforêt, we offer a wide range of socks made from Scottish yarns with a refined style.
