What is silk?
Silk is an animal fiber produced by the silkworm called bombyx. To form its cocoon, this butterfly caterpillar makes a silk thread that it winds and glues with its slime. Once harvested, the cocoons are shaken so that they unwind and reveal the end of their thread. Each cocoon yields a single continuous thread of silk as strong as steel wire. The threads are removed from the water ten at a time so that they weld together as they dry to form a stronger silk thread. The last step is the milling: the twisting of the previously gathered threads to form a fine and even stronger thread. Finally, the silk thread is wound on reels, ready to be woven. At Bleuforêt, we honor the rarity of this material with traditional knitting to offer you the highest quality silk socks.
